Call for Proposals: Muskoka Initiative Partnership Program

2010-11-18

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Partnerships with Canadians Branch (PWCB) is launching a $75 million call for projects over $500,000 to take a comprehensive and integrated approach to address maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH), under its Partners for Development Program.

The deadline for submissions is 23:00 PST (Pacific Standard Time), January 28, 2011.

The objective of this call is to support Canada’s Muskoka Initiative to achieve concrete development results that will reduce maternal, newborn, and child mortality.

At the Muskoka 2010 G8 Summit, Canada championed a major initiative to improve maternal, newborn, and under-five child health in developing countries through which $1.1 billion is dedicated in new funding for MNCH.

Projects must align with the elements and principles of Canada’s contribution to the Muskoka Initiative, which will focus its efforts along three key paths:

  • Strengthening health systems to improve health service delivery at the district level by training more health workers and expanding access for mothers and children to needed health care facilities and interventions
  • Improving nutrition by increasing access to healthful and nutritious food and needed nutritional supplements that help reduce mortality
  • Addressing the leading diseases and illnesses that are killing mothers and their children

Projects must be implemented in eligible countries with high rates of maternal and child mortality .

This call will fund projects from Canadian organizations in partnership with organizations in developing countries. Projects must be completed by December 31, 2014. CIDA will contribute $500,000 and more to projects on a cost-shared basis of up to 3:1. For example, partners would contribute at least $500,000 to a $2 million project. Overhead will be included in CIDA’s contribution.

With this call, CIDA will:

  • Concentrate half of PWCB funding in the countries of focus identified in the table
  • Concentrate 80 percent of funding for MNCH in Africa
