CFRI Postdoctoral Fellowship – Vaccines against Neglected Global Diseases

2010-11-18

Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Division of Infectious and Immunological Diseases
Vaccine Evaluation Centre
Department of Paediatrics, Faculty of Medicine
University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada

The Kollmann laboratory, based at the Child and Family Research Institute (CFRI), at BC Children’s Hospital at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to research and develop vaccines against neglected global diseases (NGD). It will center on a Listeria monocytogenes-based vaccine delivery system. The project is expected to produce all the pre-clinical trial data necessary to initiate human clinical trials within 5 years of initiation, i.e. will span the entire spectrum from conception to implication, from small animal models to human subjects. It will also entail molecular biology (e.g., cloning of the vector), immunology (measuring the resulting immune response), and host-pathogen interaction in appropriate challenge models.

The successful applicant will have a doctorate in a field of biomedical science that is relevant to the focus of this project (e.g., microbiology, molecular biology, or immunology). The applicant will help supervise a team of graduate students and technicians. The position thus requires exemplary interpersonal, communication, coordination and organization skills, proven team/collaborative skills within a laboratory setting, and excellent problem solving abilities.  This position will involve high level of participation in a multidisciplinary team setting and collaboration with external content experts, reviewers and funding agencies.

As one of the leading research centres in Canada, the research fellow will be exposed to both the innovative research at the CFRI and the strong academic environment of the University of British Columbia. The position also entails close interactions with Advaxis, the company with the foremost experience in the field of Listeria-based vaccines. In these stimulating and complementary surroundings, the fellow will have ample opportunities for advancement and interdisciplinary professional development, both in the academic and commercial setting.  In addition, Vancouver is a vibrant city that has been consistently ranked as one of the most livable cities in the world.

This position will commence as soon as possible.  It is a one-year term appointment, with potential for annual renewal for up to 4 years.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Please submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a statement of areas of expertise and strengths, and the names of three references, no later than 15 January 2011 to:
