UBC Pharmaceutical Sciences graduate student awarded Grand Challenges Canada Stars in Global Health internship

The University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences graduate student Jo-Ann Osei-Twum has accepted a competitive internship position with the Grand Challenges Canada Stars in Global Health program.

Jo-Ann completed a Bachelor of Science in Cell Biology and Genetics from UBC and started her Masters program in 2010 under the supervision of Dr. Kishor Wasan, professor and associate dean, Research & Graduate Studies, UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. Jo-Ann is currently investigating the role of P-glycoprotein in the absorption of Amphotericin B, which could have important implications on its oral bioavailability.

GCC 4As an intern with Grand Challenges Canada based out of the University Health Network, University of Toronto, Jo-Ann will support the Stars in Global Health program and supplement her research with valuable experience. In this role, commencing May 6, 2013, she will undertake a number of projects including outreach activities in order to enhance applications from areas that currently have low participation in Grand Challenges Canada activities.

“It’s a great honor to be selected to intern with Grand Challenges Canada. I’m thankful to Dr. Wasan and the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for their support throughout the application process,” says Jo-Ann.

Funded by the Government of Canada, the Grand Challenges Canada Stars in Global Health program supports “bold ideas with big impact in global health.” Applicants are required to submit a two-minute video outlining their proposed innovation to address a complex global health challenge.

“Jo-Ann is an outstanding Pharmaceutical Sciences student and we are confident she will make the most out of this exciting opportunity. We look forward to welcoming her back to the Faculty in September, 2013,” says Dr. Wasan.
