Nester Korchinsky Student Leadership Award goes to Olga Pena

Congratulations to Olga Pena, Founder of the Accessible Science Initiative who was presented with the Nester Korchinsky Student Leadership Award at the 2013 UBC Student Leadeship Conference.

Olga receives her award at the closing keynote at the Student Leadership Conference, January 12, 2013.

This award was initiated in honour of the leadership of Dr. Nestor Korchinsky, who was a professor at UBC and the Director of Intramural Programming for 38 years. Dr. Korchinsky’s leadership and initiative created one of the most renowned intramural programs in the country, as he saw a need in the university community and filled it by creating what is now UBC REC. The award, presented annually at the UBC Student Leadership Conference, is meant to recognize a student who embodies Dr. Korchinsky’s spirit of leadership and initiative at UBC and potentially in the wider community as well.

In order to be nominiated for the award the student has to demonstrat sustained leadership and intiatives that go above and beyond that of their peers, on the UBC campus and perhaps in the wider comunity.  Additionally, contributions made by the recipient demonstrate a commitment to leadership and positive change within the university community that is worthy of recognition.

Olga’s nominators stressed her passion and commitment, as well as her consistent ability to go above and beyond in her endeavours.  The Accessible Science Initiative’s vision is to collectively promote the access and development of science education, scientific research and biotechnology in low and middle income countries.
